György Kepes (1906-2001) At the end of the 1920s the artist and scientist György Kepes, who had become world-famous as an influential representative of the New Bauhaus founded in Chicago, was a student of István Csók at the College of Fine Arts in Budapest. As a member of the circle of Lajos Kassák, Kepes got acquainted with the avantgarde trends of the period, then in 1930 he moved to Berlin on the invitation of László Moholy-Nagy. Giving up painting, he started to deal with photography and film more and more. It was during his search of the points of intersection between the arts and sciences that he found the essential features of natural processes which for him meant symmetry, balance and rhythm. The harmonious unity of these three can be seen in his paintings, photos and photograms on display here. Later, as a teacher of the New Bauhaus in Chicago, he delivered highly effective lectures on the artistic applications of modern technology. According to his frequently quoted theory, in order to understand the new world picture, "we must use all our faculties to the full-assimilitaing with the the scientist's brain, the poet's heart and the painter's eyes." Besides his works of art and applied graphics, Kepes also had a significant influence on the progressive tendencies of 20th-century visual culture. While the exhibition in Debrecen displays the most important paintings of the artist, there is a special emphasis on his experimental works of photography which were born as a result of his studies in the art of light. In addition to György Kepes’ pieces of art, visitors can also see theachievements of some of his students. The majority of the works on display are part of the legacy given to the city of Eger.
