The construction of the barrage started in spring 1967 by the construction of the ring dike against floods. The construction pit was built by scrapers and excavators under the protection of the ring dike. The construction of the ground water lowering system followed gradually the earth exploitation. Construction work could be continued without interruption in the construction pit protected by the ring dike during the extreme, long duration flood on the Tisza River in 1970. The amount of earthwork performed for the construction of the barrage was round 4,2 million cu. m. In the framework of construction of the main canals and of the reservoir levees, the amount of eartwork to be done in the first stage was 8,2 million cu. m. At the back-water side of the structure a diaphragm wall of reinforced concrete with a structure a diaphragm wall of reinforced concrete with a surface area of 10 500 sq. m was constructed for reducing the uplit force acting on the bedplate and on the tailrace, for controlling the amount of seepage water flowing under or a round the structure and for reducing the velocity of seepage water emerging at the downstream side.
