The water demand of the irrigation systems at Tiszafüred and Hódmezővásárhely constructed in the 1930's could be safely met under the then prevailing natural runoff conditions of the Tisza River. The Tiszalök Irrigation System serving the development of irrigation at a greater rate and the alleviation of the water shortage in the Körös River Valley already called for the changing of the natural conditions. To control the water level, by means of establishing weirs and reservoirs has become indispensable. The barrages having the main task of meeting the requirements of water resources development and water transfer, also create further possibilities for use, e. g. for water power development and establishing a waterway providing suitable conditions for navigation. The canalization of the Tisza River started with the construction of the Tiszalök Barrage in 1950, which was commissioned in 1954. Water from the backwater reach of the barrage is diverted at the rate of 60 cu.m/sec to the Eastern- and Western Main Canals supplying irrigation water for 150 000 hectares of land and for meeting industrial and domestic water demands in the Tiszalök. Water Resources System and for water transfer into the Körös Valley. The capacity of the turbines in the power station is 14 MW and is used for generating 55 million kWh of mostly peak power on the annual average. The backwater reach created on the Tisza and Bodrog rivers is navigable for large vessels over a length of 130 km and enabling the storage of 10 million cu.m water in the channel.
