The development of the Tisza region has been affected at all times by the inseparably intertwined natural and social conditions. In the region, in the preceding centuries, flood plain management was carried out developed according to the existing possibilities and demands. Occassionally this water-world provided protection and hiding-place to its inhabitants against the enemy because strangers could hardly pass it if at all. The flood plain has abundantly met the building material demand of the population living there in the form of mud, timber, twing, reed, bulrush and bruswood mattress. Carpets, coverlets, potteries, moccasins and other consumer goods could also be made from these materials. Extensive fishing was carried out not only in the rivers but in the meadows too: „...the Tisza River, when flooding the plain, fills up every place not only with water but with fishes too. Where ponds are formed before the stage falls and the water moves back to the riverbed, the peasants build some dikes to prevent the fishes from returning with the falling water. Therefore the fishes are retained just like in the fish-ponds. It sometimes happens, that such a large amount of fishes bumps against the dike that it breaks and the fish escape ruining the work and the expectation of the peasants.” There have been very important water uses, such as the ship-mills and the dike-mills, as well as navigation.
