The number of signatures necessary fór the decree of a by-election vas first of all collected in December calling fór Dr Miklós Vida*s resignation. Then in January a petition vas signed vith the necessary quota calling fór the resignation of Sándor Dauda MP fór Zugló and Mrs Cservenka MP fór Gödöllő. Calls fór the resignation of others vere alsó heard, including Antal Apró MP fór County Csongrád’s constituency no. 1, vho thought it better to reaign fór health reasons voluntarily. Apró vas a member of the govemment from 1951 until 1971, excluding the fev days that the revolution vas victorious, and from 1971 until 1984. he vas President of Pariiáment. Hovever any pronouncement on these calls fór resignation go at a snails pace and név by-elections have nőt been decreed anyvhere. The Hungárián Nevs Agency recently published information vhich said that the Budapest Vili district elec- toral presidium had turnéd to the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice fór advice on proceedings to be taken in the case of Dr Miklós Vida. They then began to check the validity of the signatories, bút of the 2175 of them they have only "checked" 230. On Mondsy they held a meeting and invited Dr Miklós Vida, he called the calls fór his resignation illegal and ground- less and asked them to reject the petition or, as a consideration to his health, to postpone further proceedings until the end of March, At the same time he said he vould take part in any other electoral presidium meetings accompanied by his lavyer. An announcement has nov been issued by the VIII district branch of the Young Democrats Alliance, its Technical University branch and the Free Democrats Alliance*s VIII district group. They say that these events are only attempts to delay and suppress the case. They state that despite their vritten request neither the electorate, the public nor Young Democrats Alliance*s represent- atives vere invited to check the signatories; it seems that this public and "impartial check" is represented by Miklós Vida. The announcement says "The present proceedings are the most humiliating fór an MP as it seems he has nőt the courage to come before his electorate and be evaluated. If, as he says, he is unable to appear before his constituents fór medical reasons then he vili alsó be unable to carry out his duties as an MP and as Vice-President. We find it unacceptable that decisions about our future should be taken by an MP in vhom the electorate have no faith". The announcement alsó accuses "local potentates" of uniting te secure their pover and calls upon the National Electoral Presidium to decree a by-election "in order to pacify the electors and puolic opinion".-v, i .
