Air pollution ha3 been acknowledged officially bút a smog álért was nőt seen to be justified. A few days ago the independent Nagymaros Committee issued an announcement in which they called fór an anti-smog action on Blaha Lujza Square at 4*30 pm on February 13th. The organisers wanted to stop two lanes of traffie from going intő the city fór a few minutes. Participants were to wear gas masks and scarfs and carry banners to draw attention to the problem. They were to demanü the authorities to take steps to reduce it. On Monday morning Police CoIonéi Sándor Pongor summoned the organisers to the Budapest Police Headquarters. He told them he would nőt allow it as according to the new law of association and assembly they should have announced it three days before in writing, bút it would nőt have been permitted anyway because it would have caused huge traffie hold-ups. The environmentalists went to the square at the appointed time and announced on loud speakers what would have happened and why it did nőt take piacé. | Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged.
