Of the Political Committee’s fifteen members eight voted fór the expulsions, five against them, including those concemed, and two abstained. The expelled leading officials were accused of splitting the party, because Iván Bába (contrary to the Political Gommittee’s previous decision) proposed to waive the listing of nominations by parties in the 1990 elections. István Jezsó has signed common declarations by several independent organisations without the partyfe permission. Tibor Légrády sent letters attacking the party’s President to local leaders and Dr Károly Ravasz, who supported these three, is suspected of still being in the service of the communist party after more than 4-0 years. The decision to actually expel them was first brought up after they had held a separate meeting in Jezsó’s fiat, in which they asked régiónál leaders to sign a decla- ration about the formation of the Small Holders Party’s reform wing. On the evening of February 25th Iván Bába responded to the accusations on Hungárián Television, he stressed that the dispute is nőt caused by hostilities bet- ween different generations bút by different political conceptions. A mai nap ("Today"), a recently established paper, published a statement by Dr Károly Ravasz entitled "Quarrelling Small Holders". According to the 66 year old Ravasz the Small Holders Party*s most accoraplished representatives, who ürgéd more active policies, have been expelled by the old guard. Both Iván Bába and Dr Károly Ravasz stressed that the decision was illegal and that they would ig- nore it. The various independent groups which prepare fór the March 15th cele- bration continue to accept István Jezsó as a representative of the Small Holders Party. György Fejti, the secretary of the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party’s Central Gommittee, has called a meeting with representativés of the Small Holders Party on March 4th as part of the bilateral discussions, which the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party wishes to conduct with the leaders of the new and re-formed parties. The dispute in the Small Holders Party, as in the Social Democrats Party, blew up just before these discussions were to take piacé. In the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party’s February lOth meeting Károly Grósz said in his speech: "we must nőt act against the multi-party system, bút we must ponder: how the process of the multi-party system’s formation can be affected and what must be done in order that the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party maintains a leading role within the multi-party system." It is well known that the Hungárián Communist Party split the Independent Small Holders Party between 1945 and 1947 by inciting internál disputes. // Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged.
