^ CCKÜHSARIAN (§} OCTOBUU? _ J esml Editor: György Krassó • 24/D Little Russell Street * London, WC1A 2HN * Tel. 01-430 2126 (írom abroad 441-430 2126) 26th January, 1989 Samizdat Exhibition and Fórum In the Jurta Theatre On the afternoon and evening of Wednesday January 25th several Hungárián independent publishers organised a programme in the Jurta Theatre, entitled "Libertás". The title of the programme refers, apart from the free spirit of the samizdat presses, to a mutual aid organisation set up two years ago, called "Libertás", by a few persecuted publishers. The event, which the organisers advertised in the Tuesday edition of the paper Magyar Nemzet ("Hungárián Nat- ion"), opened at 5 pm with an exhibition of samizdat publications collected over the last ten years. At 7 pm the evening*s entertainment began and at 8.30 there was a public fórum in which it was possible to question the publishers. Meanwhile, at 6 pm, people could visit an exhibition on Afghanistan by the INCONM group in the theatre*s wardrobe. The samizdat exhibition entitled "Your Book" had been held five years before by the independent presses, bút at that time they could only hold it in a priváté fiat and policemen surrounded the nouse and photographed the visitors. The Wednesday exhibition was studied with great interest by a capacity audi- ence, they were only sorry that the old publications, already museum peices, were nőt fór sale. However they could buy the latest independent press matériái, such as the January edition of Demokrata. Tibor ^éray’s book Imre Nagy*s Life and Death. Füveskert ("Grassy Garden") a volume containing poems written in prison before 1956 and the Hungárián reprint of the Paris based Irodalmi Újság ("Literary News"). Somé of the publishers alsó distributed propaganda matériái such as baages and greetings caras. During the entertainment excerpts from the papers Egtá.iak között ("Between Points of the Compass"), Demokrata and Magyar Zsidó ("Hungárián Jew") and from publications producea by the "Catalyst Office", "Trend" and "ABC" independent presses, were read out by the Jurta’s actors. In the fórum it was possible to question the publishers of the above mentioned papers and, over the telephoné, the editor of the London based Hungárián October Freepress. Bút the programme and fórum did nőt live up to the expectations of most of those present because, due to a technical hitch with the amplifying system, the organisers decided arbitrarily to leave somé of the iteas on the programme out.
