The letter says that despite promises of reform representatives of a Stalinist cultural policy which has seriously damaged Hungárián intellectual life are still in office. It demands the dismissal of Dr Gyula Mezei, the leader of the Budapest City Council’s Cultural Department and his immediate colleaguesj the authors of the letter hold them responsible fór the desparate situation of the Jurta Theatre, saying that they did all they could "to eliminate the fórum fór democratic dissent". They wish to send the letter vhen there are five thousand signatures. In the United States there is an initiative to savé the Jurta Theatre. The appeal fór this, which has already appeared in American Hungárián language papers, asked all those who gave donations fór the construction of the Budapest National Theatre to come forward by submitting their names and the amount that they sent and to state their demand that the Hungárián government must spend their donations on rectifying the Jurta Theatre’s financial situation. Those who donated wished to help Hungárián national culture, says the appeal, bút the national theatre will nőt be built fór a while. If the donations are nőt used fór the purpose fór which they were given then the right of disposal retums to those who donated. In Budapest there is a national spirited theatre, the Jurta Theatre, it is here that the bravest and most truthful voices are heard speaking fór Transylvania, Nagymaros, the necessity fór replacements in the government, political democracy, historieal jurisdiction and fór a new constitution. If the Jurta Theatre gets intő the govern- ment,s hands there will be no space in Hungary fór the above meetings and debates. Those who wish to have tne donations they sent fór the construction of the National Theatre transferred to savé the Jurta Theatre can send their statements to the following address: Jurta Defence Pund, 84 North Stamford Road, Stamford, Connecticut 06905, USA. The Jurta plans to issue a similar appeal to those who made donations to the National Theatre and live in Hungary. The theatre continues to negotiate with the Budapest j.n order to arrange a loan of 30 millión forints over three years, a West Germán bank has pledged guarantee of payment.
