Plans to Bstablish New Unions. The Scientific Workers Democratic Union (SWDU) which uas formed in May concentrates its future activity on strengthening its primary organisations and building up new ones. They have drafted a schedule fór the delegate assembly planned fór December and have set up working groups. The task of this assembly will be to adopt a programme, the rules of association and to designate future tasks. The SWDU vili hold a public fórum every third Thursday of the month in the Budapest Kossuth Club to which they will invite people with similar views to their own and of opposing views. The theme of the first Autumn fórum on September 28th will be wage reform and wage policy. The forums in October and November will deal with scientific policy and the question of unión rights. The SWDU will now debate about the bili conceming the right to assemble and unité. They are worried about certain clauses in the bili, especially those dealing with the formation of unions, and they wish to issue a statement soon, The SWDU continues to make contact with national organisations and the government without jeopardising its independence. They alsó intend to make intemational con- tacts. The greetings sent by the SWDU*s Caretaker Committee to the Polish unión Solid- arity which stressed that the basic principles and aims of the two unions are similar provoked great interest at the intemational humán rights conference held in Kraków at the end of August. The greetings were passed on by Endre Hann and Bálint Magyar in Kraków. In Budapest it has been said that those who work in the film industry and fór tele- vision are preparing to form a unión, following the example of the SWDU and drawing on its experiences, journalists would alsó like to form a unión. £ Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowlcdged.
