On Thursday September lst a 148 page anthology edited by Anna Perczel, Balázs Vargha, and András Nagy and entitled "Danube" was published by the Statistical Press. In it Hungárián writers focus on the Danube in poems, essays, short stories and commemorat- ions. The contributors include Sándor Csoóri, István Csurka, István Eorsi, Péter Esterházy, Ferenc Karinthy, Gyula Kodolányi, Mihály Korniss, György Petri, Ákos Szilágyi, István Vas and representatives of foreign Hungárián iiterature such as Győző Határ, Miklós Duray, Sándor Kányádi, László Márton and Géza Szőcs. The book was láunched in the Writers Bookshop in Liszt Square and authors signed volumes. However nőt everybody could get intő the bookshop, so great was the crowd, so many people had to stand outside. A little incident took piacé. György Petri a poet, one of the authors involved and an editor of the samizdat periodical Beszélő ("The Talker"), was harassed by the police, he asked them to identify themselves bút they called fór reinforcements on their short wave rádió. However when they arrived they thought it better to leave rather than provoke an incident. The crowd applauded when the uninvited guests departed. Petri was asked to identify himself because he was distributing leaflets which said that the govemment had speeded up the construction of the dam instead of providing the information they had promised. It expects co-operation from the people although it does nőt allow the nation to decidé. "We are trapped againl" - says the leaflet, it demands a referendum and announces a protest on September 12th. The leaflet was signed by more than twenty social groups including the environmentalist movements, the Young Democrats Alliance, the Hungárián Cemocratic Fórum, the Network fór Free Initiatives and the Bajcsy-Zsilinszky í'riendship Society. The latest issue of Heti Világgazdaság ("Weekly World Economy") reports on the June 29th Parliamentary speech given by Zoltán Király M.P. which has nőt been published before. He demanded a review of the dam decision. In the paper there is alsó an interview with Dr Peter Pilz Austrian Greens. M.P., he sharply criticises the Austrian government and gives advice on how to render protest action effective, how to tűm demands intő reality. The joumal alsó published a declaration of protest by Hungárián environmentalist movements and different democratic opposition groups which is against the construction of the Bős-Nagymaros dam being speeded up.
