It was agreed that the report would be disserainated at Parliament’s Autumn session. The Danube Circle reacted imraediately to this and issued a declaration a few hours ago which states that the Council of Minister’s September 7th meeting disregarded the serious objections raised by the most important Hungárián scientific and economic institutes and that the proposal it will submit to Parliament uncritically supports the construction of the Bó's-Nagymaros dam. The declaration points out that due to pressure from civil society the govemment has nőt ruled out the possibility of a referendum, it alsó states however that this hurried resolution confronts M.P.s with a fait accompli. "The govemment - oontinues the declaration - instead of stopping construction and pausing to think says that there is no other choice bút to continue construction and offers to combat the résülting damage. Our statement is final. We demand that construction is halted immediately, a complete independent investigation by experts, the immediftte publication of the resolution and other information, including the recent "concrete data" mentioned by govemment spokes- people and that the population is allowed to participate in this decision. We protest against the destructioij of our natural assets, the devastation of our national memóriái places, the bordér changes and the destruction of the countryside along the Danube. Leading economists, including govemment advisors, have said that the Bó's-Visegrád investment is completely senseless. By forcing this issue the economic policy which plunged the country intő its present crisis is perpetuated. In our demonstration on September 12th we will make our statement in an orderly manner. This protest against the Hungárián, Czech and Austrian bulldozers will be as dignified as the June protest against the destruction of Románián villages." - ends the Danube Circle declaration dated September 8th. Today’s edition of Fleti Világgazdaság ("Weekly World Economy1') reports on the statement issued by the three-day international conference in Budapest concerning the Danube barrages, it demands that construction is halted. The Scientific Workers Democratic Union will organise a public debate on September 15th at 5 pm in Debrecen in the Atomic Research Institute building on Poroszlay Street about the dam. They have invited Borsod and Hajdu-Bihar County M.P.s, the presidents of Miskolc and Debrecen City Council, representatives of the Danube Circle, independent experts and workers from the Water Authorities and members of the Hungárián Democratic Fórum*s Miscolc group. Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged.
