What happened in Gdansk eight years ago was a great event in East-Central European history. It proved that independent grass roots movements could force the authorities to the negotiating table. The con- tract you concluded is still valid today because there is a need fór new social contracts in all East-Central European countries. Wishing you further success in your work, Regards (More than one hundred signatures) Scientific Workers Democratic Union delegates read out the following letter at the intemational humán rights conference held in Kraków between August 25th and 27th. Dear Friendsl On behalf of the Caretaker Committee of the Scientific Workers Democratic Union we warmly greet the organisers of and the participants in the Humán Rights International Conference. As the first independent Hungárián unión fór forty years we follow and support Solidarity*s fight to be acknowledged. Although our unión was formed under different conditions, to defend the interests of a smaller social strata, we believe that our basic principles and aims are the same. That is the conviction that fund- amental humán rights such as freedom of speech and the right to assemble and unité are the provisos fór a humán existence in East-Europe. We hope that our organisations can co-operate and that there will be regular persona! contact between us.
