It appears that there has been a genuine change in the official attitűdé. Although the leadership has recently stressed that the question of Transylvanian refugees is the internál affair of Hungary and Románia, Mátyás Szűrös, the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party*s Secretary fór Foreign Affairs, has declared that "If necessary we will tűm to intemational forums" in an interview published in today’s edition of the paper Népszabadság ("Peoples Freedom"). Szűrös uent even further in his speech given in Eger Castle this morning on the occasion of Saint Stephen’s Day. He acknowledged that "the govemment took its time to publicly speak out in defense of Hungarians living outside Hungary" and that he demands action from "civilized nations". In his speech Szűrös voiced the demand to obtain "proper individual and collective rights fór Europe*s largest minority, the more than twó millión strong Románián Hungarians, including the creation of personal, territorial and cultural autonomies". In this speech Szűrös alsó touched upon the reform of Hungary*s domestic situation and political institute system. He said that we must once and fór all cease dividing the state and the nation. A new type of grass roots democratic socialism is necessary in order to have a lasting genuine dialogue, open debates, openness, publicity and social autonomy, because "only then will the nation be given what it is due - the exercise of power". Nice v/ords. Words which up until now have only been voiced by the participants in the Democratic Opposition Movement. How much of it will come true? That remains to be seenl Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged.
