There was a period of cruel reprisals in Hungary followed by the Kádár régimé’s "goulash communism" and the population could nőt engage in political activity fór a quarter of a century when - in October 1981 - the first commemoration took piacé in a priváté fiat. Nov on June 5th 1988 - 32 years after the revolution with the approach of the 30th anniversary of Imre Nagy’s execution - a group of those who suffered in the post 56 reprisals, of those imprisoned and harassed fór decades, of the relatives of those who were executed and of those who were slandered by the communist régimé has appeared. This group demands historical jurisdiction and has issued an announcement to Hungárián society. It is as follows: 30 years ago on June l6th 1958 Imre Nagy, the Prime Minister in the October 23rd 1956 revolution, was executed along with two colleagues, Pál Maiéter Minister of Defence and Miklós Gimes a joumalist. Another of the accused József Szilágyi had been hanged in secret earlier, Géza Losonczy the Minister of State - accused of the second order - was killed in prison in December 1957 before the court comedy com- menced. Fór three decades hundreds of victims of the restoration have been hidden in unmarked graves. There is no example in Hungárián history fór the reprisals which followed the suppression of the revolution. After the earlier revolutions the Haps- burgs, the Haynau and Horthy régimés did nőt slander, sentence, execute and exile as many people as the régimé which came to power on November 4th 1956. The time has come fór Hungárián society to demand the complete morál, political and legal rehabilitation of the victims of these reprisals, both dead and alive. This is the prerequisite fór all renewal and fór a spiritual and political purge. The memory of the revolution and its martyrs is necessarY to sweep away the squalor. Bút this purge and the necessary compensation must cover a longer period. Hundreds of Christian, Social Democrat, Bourgeois, Peasant Party and Small Holders Party politicians who had founded Hungárián democracy after 1945 were imprisoned and thousands of intellectuals were wrongly accused and have still nőt received either political or morál reparation. As there has been no advancement in three decades the signatories believe it is necessary to take the initiative. Thus the "Historical Jurisdiction Committee" has been formed to push fór the legal repeal of all disadvan- tages connected with previous conviction. There must be a stop to the following:- the present discrimination -in the amount of pension they récéivé.- the discriminatory secret and non-secret measures used when applying fór a job.- the passport law’s regulation which excludes those with previous convictions. We alsó believe that rehabilitation is necessary fór all political prisoners and former internees. The publication of documents conceming the 1956 revolution and the reprisals should be allowed as well as the free circulation of foreign publications dealing with this subject.----------^ Subscribers can use or quote the Hungárián October newsletters in totál or in detail as long as the source is acknowledged.
