The Police Árrést and "Wam" Members of the Opposition. After the house searches held on March 8th and 9th in the flats of Opposition members reports appeared on Hungárián Rádió and Television and in the official Hungárián press about the police action. Rezső Bányász, the director of the govem- ment’s information agency spoke about the activities of "extrerae and irresponsible" elements in a press conference. The members of the Hungárián independent press who were subjected to house searches at the beginning of the week issued a declaration. It is as follows: Several millión Hungárián citizens heard or read the police report which stated that "pamphlets were confiscated which called fór a disturbance of the March 15th celebration as well as other publications and printing machines from Péter Bokros, Gábor Demszky, György Gadó, Péter Grawátsch, Jenő Nagy and Ottília Solt." This announcement is untrue. As the Hungárián Television did nőt answer our request fór corrections we were obliged to tut-n to other communication agencies. We declare: that the authorities who conducted the house searches did nőt take away any pamphlets conceming March 15th let alone ones which called fór a disturbance of the celebration. They did nőt confiscate duplicating machines either, they took away samizdat publications and typewriters. Heedless of these facts the police report only served a pre-determined objective to present us in a hostile light. They thus managed to find so-called "evidence" suitable fór a pre-ordained crime. This method which is still alive in public memory has nőt been used fór a long time. Our national celebration is nőt troubled by those who wish to celebrate freely bút by those who cause hysteria and fear, namely by the authorities. While the state blames social unrest on a nominated enemy (even threatening members of the Democratic Opposition with personal reprisals fór causing breaches of the peace which can only be provoked by violent police action) strives to suppress and disregard independent social initiatives. This is alsó proved by the government spokesperson’s declaration. While the state insinuates that dissidents incite against the gypsy minority, one of the leading daily papers Magyar Nemzet (Hungárián Nation) excites anti-gypsy feelings in a series of articles and at the same time praises police violence. The official phrases about democracy have no meaning, the behaviour of the Party and the government is characterised by the above mentioned machinations. March llth^1988, Budapest. Peter Bokros, Gábor Demszky, Róza Hódosán, György Gadó, Péter Grawátsch, Jenő Nagy, Ottília Solt. Tamás Molnár, graphic artist and a member of the INCONNU group, and Jenő Nagy, editor of the ABC independent press and of the samizdat periodical Demokrata (The Democrat), were taken to the police station yesterday aftemoon and told that they would be held responsible, along with other members of the Opposition, fór any disturbance which opcurred on March 15th. They rejected this announcement calling it political blackmail; they declared that March 15th is a national celebration in which young people traditionally commemorate the I848 revolution and freedom fight with peaceful marches; skirmishes have only occurred in recent years when police have attacked the young people celebrating. They said that the Democratic Opposition vili nőt be held responsible fór any police provocation. Péter Grawátsch alsó received a summons today from the police.
