Declaration By Independent Press Workers. When the two-day conference organised in the Budapest Kilton Hotel about the openness of International Press Agencies ended yesterday,a group of foreign journalists went to see Gábor Demszky the editor of the independent press AB and the samizdat periodical A Hírmondó /The Messenger/. The journalists looked at the independent publications - journals, the works of Milán Kundera, George Orwell, György Konrád and others - and left satisfied. Soon at 7.20 pm Demszky * had new visitors: tuo plainclothes police and four state security investigators. They did nőt come fór a discussion bút to conduct a house search, At the same time as part of a co-ordinated action the police stopped a cár in the XIth district. In the cár samizdat publications were found - including more than 800 copies of the latest issue of the independent publication Magyar Zsidó (Hungárián Jev). The driver Gábor Zrínyifalvi a graphic artist and his passenger György Gadó were taken to the Xlth district Police Headquarters and, after a three quarter of an hour wait, the detectives took Gadó to his fiat and there began a search. Gadó is an active member of the independent Jevish peace group "Salom" and works fór the newspaper Magyar Zsidó. Detectives alsó appeared at Jenő Nagy’s fiat at 7.20 pm, he is the editor of the independent press ABC and the periodical Demokrata (The Democrat). They alsó visited Peter Bokros a member of the independent art group INC0NNU and Péter Gravátsch who was one of the organisers of the silent aemonstration held on Feb- ruary lst in front of the Románián Qnbassy. The house searches lasted until davn. The police confiscated seven typewriters - including an electronic IBM a videó camera, a badge maker and a photocopier, many hundreds of samizdat publications, manuscripts, graphics and notes from five flats. They naturally included the novels of Milán Kundera, George Orwell and György Konrád. An unexpected guest of Jenő ííagy’s was alsó searched and the registered letter slip of a letter, sent to the leadership of the Yugoslav Socialist Union of Republics on behalf of Károly Vicéi a Hungárián writer form Senta who was sentenced to two and a half years, was confiscated. The belief that police measures had ceased against dissidents was shattered. A national celebration is approaching and the police - as always - try everything to prevent a big youth démonstration. Today members of the Hungárián independent press issued a declaration in which they pointed out that "The matériái damage was about 625000 forints. This police action is the result of a secret decision made by the Hungárián Socialist Workers Party Central Committee on February lst. The decision called upon the party organs and state management organisations to force back and eliminate the social organis- ations which have come intő existence in the last six montns and the democratic grass roots movements .... The followers and members of the Hungárián independent press are indignant about these measures. The authorities violence towards freedom of speech and democratic development is contradicted by what a number of Party leaders said in recent months about openness, press freedom, democratic reforms and the necessity of dialogue with dissidents.
