Somé of them are hiding - Hungárián families shelter them -, others ask fór permission to settle from the authorities and a section of them get residence permits. Many such Románián refugees, who have already got temporary residence permits, were summoned in recent weeks to KEOKH in Budapest, the Ministry of Interior Foreign Control National Central Office. Their residence permits were taken away from them and they were expelled from Hungary. The time limit: a week. The piacé of depart- ure: the Románián bordér. An estimated 150-200 are to be expelled from Budapest. The Hungárián Social Political and National Knowledge Clubs - part of which is under the auspices of the Peoples Patriotic Front - has until now done a lót fór the Transylvanian refugees. The National Club Council held a meeting and sent the following letter to the Prime Minister Karoly Grósz: To Karoly Grósz, President of the Council of Ministers Budapest Dear Prime Minister, The Social Political and National Knowledge Clubs Council leadership are aston- ished to learn from those involved that on Januar.y 4th 5th, 6th and 7th 1988 KEOKH in addition to withdrawing residence permits which were given to many of the Románián refugees staying in Hungary have supplied them with "single exit visas" which are valid fór one week from the Románián bordér, thus they are being expelled. According to the unofficial estimate there are about ten thousand Románián refugees in Hungary - the májőrity of them of Hungárián nationality - the greater part of which are registered by the authorities, in fact many of them got residence permits. The Románián organs have built concentration camps fór those refugees and deportees who were caught. We protest, as people who care about the nation, against tuming over these humiliated and innocent people to the Románián police and the discredit which would result to Hungary’s internatr- ional name. We demand that all questions connected with the case be brought before the public, the establishing of responsibility, the immediate withdrawal of the expulsion orders and a reassuring solution to the settlement of refugees living here similar to the one given to political refugees Greek, Chilean etc. Thus Románián Hungarians need no longer be forced to the West. That is nőt to say that the critical situation of the Románián Hungarians can be solved by emigration bút by assuring legal rights in their native land. At the same time we hope that Hungárián society will hide and shelter refugees living in mortal danger until the necessary measures are taken. The text of this letter was adopted by the Social Political and National Knowledge Clubs Council leadership on January 9th 1988 and sent to other national organisations and the press. On behalf of the leadership: Secretary Tamás Beke^, Secretary Attila Begány, Seeretary Mihály Horváth. lOth January 1988. Budapest. The letter was submitted to the presidential mail box on Monday morning - llth - and sent at the same time to the Peoples Patriotic Front National Gouneil (to Imre Pozsgay), to the Party’s Central committee (to Mátyás Szűrös) and to the loung Communist League (to Csaba Hámori).
