Ot-^so 2< 26 • G. íCrossé 129/1987 (E) llth November, 1987 The Democratic Qpposition Is Afflicteó with New Measures On November llth the summary offence department of the II district police in Budapest notified András Nagy, a sociologist, that on 20th November his 25 day term of imprisonment would begin in Baracska. In recent years András Nagy has published a number of articles in samizdat periodicals. On llth March a three and a half hour house search was conducted in his fiat and publications were confiscated which had been printed without official permission. He was fined 10,000 forints uithout a hearing on the basis of a summary infringement of the press laws. András Nagy is on the "black list" and has nőt got work fór years, nőt leng ago he had a heart attack. He did nőt pay the fine and now it has been comrnuted to 25 days imprisonment. Scarcely two weeksearlier Ferenc Kőszeg, one of the editors of the samizdat period- ical Beszelő ("The Talker") was notified of a similar decision; he was given 20 days imprisonment fór nőt paying a 6000 forint fine. Kőszeg asked fér a postponement fór serving the time; it was granted. Amnesty International’s intemational secretariat requested all the sections of the organisation to send a letter to Dr Imre Markoja, the Hungárián Ministér of Justice, demanding that the accusation brought against Kőszeg and his punishment be repealea. It seems that Hungárián social agitation and its ambitions fór renewal are only ignored by the police. Mikolta Bognár, who is seriously ill, one of the editors of tne samizdat magaziné Égtájak között ("Betweeq Points of the Compass"), was informea of a 5000 forint fine fór summary infringement of press laws and if he did nőt pay the fine it would be taken out of his invalid pension. The INC0NNU group’s appeal was alsó refused, the judgement was upheld which imposed fines on Peter Bokros, Tamás Molnár and Róbert Pálinkás - they should have paid 3000 forints each - only Philipp Tibor jr’s fine was reduced from 6000forints to 4.200 forints. Jenő Nagy never gets a passport, he is an editor fór the .ABC Independent Press and fór the samizdat periodical Demokrata ("The Democrat"). The request wasnowreíüsed on the grounds that there are criminal proceedings against Jenő’ Nagy. The postman Antal Bogád -'in whose postbag samizdat publications were found in September- is unjustly harassed. He was summoned to the district court of guardians on the grounds that he was nőt looking after his children properly, such an accusation has never been levelled at him before. Antal 3ogád is very poor, he has four small children and exists in poor living conditions - the council have promisea to allocate him a new fiatfcr years bút these promises have never been fulfilled. Zsolt Keszthelyi is confined in Marianosztra Prison and systematically beaten up. According to prison regulations he can rarely speak to his rel'atives bút at least every two months. This time , and this is nőt the first time, this wa9 nőt allowed by the penal authorities . The last visit Keszthelyi had was on 5th September and now he is informed that on 7th November, due to a "holiday" they will suspend his visit until 14th November.
