The government intends to divide and disrupt the deraocratic opposition movement. The greatly emphasized principle that the party includes its own opposition is nőt tenable anymore, so the s&ate intends to create a "good" and a "bad" opposition. The "good" opposition would give, in a self-limited way, jidvices indirectly or directly bút does nőt in any way question the basis of the current political system; its participants and advisers can function as journalists or even as members of political groups. The "bad" opposition are those, named as enemies by the party leadership, who want a fund- araental and practical change of the eontemporary structure of governement. Young people appeared in the latter as the new "angry generation". This generation is a product of the crisis and has lost faith in all kinds of communist ideas and all types of its practice. This new force acknowledges the revolutionary ideas of 1956 and demands an intellectual coalition and a new programme of action. (3) The Democratic Opposition Movement, if it wishes to come out of its current crisis, should gather in active Creative minded communities and should establish a coordination committee fór the different groups. Then it could demonstrate and emanate its ideas via new mediums and forge a reál way forward fór true civil rights resistance. An authorized spokesperson could give regular verbal and written information about current domestic and foreign political questions, and the movement could establish its’ own financial system. Fór this to work com- plete openness, respect f°r the autonomy of different groups and the possibility of other democratic groups joining them is necessary. Finally we believe that the opposition movement must, before it is too laté, draw up a theoretical and practical programme to stop current negative social processes. It must be prepared to take part in a truly democratic peoples movement as their forbears did in 1956. October 23rd,1987 INCONNU Independent Art Qroup (Budapest - London)- 2 -
