Krossá 124/1987 (E) October 31st, 1987 Organisers of the illegal National Natúré Conservation Societv call a meeting As reportedjthirteen Hungárián citizens planned to found the National Natúré Conservation Society in the Spring of this year. In May they held two public meetings to debate the aims of the future Society and its working methods, nearly 200 interested people participated. Previously the organisers had held a detailed discussion vith Dr Kálmán Ábrahám the president of the National Environnentand Natúré Conservation Office (OKTH). One of the workers in this office took part in the public meetings and personally consulted with many of the organisers. In spite of this the OKTH forbade any furuher organisation of the Society on May 2bth without giving any concrete reasóns, and later refused their appeal alleging in its decision 2681-4/1987 that the Society’s "aim and work was nőt in accora with the national, social and economic order of the Hungárián People’s Republic". The organisers of the Society do nőt agree with this suatement. In their view the protection of natúré does nőt contradict the interests of the Hungárián People’s Republic, and it is impossible to judge the "work" of a society wnich does nőt yet exist. This view was expressed in a complaint which they sent on September a3rd to the Council of Ministers of the Hungárián Peoples Republic. They reportea that the OKTH had frustrated a society being founöed .with similar objectives in 1984. Those who lodged the complaint asked the Council of Ministers to repeal the OKTH decision, to allow the Society to be founaed and to nominate a controlling authority fór it. Meanwhile Budapest rádió had focussed on the unfavourable natúré of tne decision which forbade the setting up of a Natúré Conservation Society and conducted an interview with one of the organisers bút nőt with the OKTH who refused to aiscuss the matter. The Hungárián "Greens" will nőt give up bút tenaciously struggle fór their aims. As they did nőt récéivé an answer to their complaint after more than a month they decided to take further steps: on October 27th they sent the following invitation to hundreas of addresses, to those interested in natúré protection. "We have the honour to inform you that we will be giving detailed information about tne present situation and background of our experiment to found a society in a meeting which will be held in the Belváros Cultural House (Budapest V Molnár Street 9) on November 5th 1987 at 6 pm. You are all welcome. In the meeting you can become acquainted with the work of already active environnmt and natúré protection groups like the Danube Foundation. We count on your presence. October 27th,Budapest, 1987. The ’Danube' National Envircnment and Natúré Protection Society organisers" The signatories sent a copy of the last OKTH decision and of tne appeal which they had lodged with tne Council of Ministers with tne invitation. ______(f I
