Hungarian-Austrian, Hungarian-West-German or fór that matter a Hungarian- American Cultural Association), bút a Hungarian-Polish Society would be even more important than these. This is dictated by the mere fact of numbers, if nothing else; Poland has a population of 37 millión, consequently mamy more of them establish contact with us through tourism and personal relations, than of the residents of the other two countries. An even more important factor is the extent to which the cultural heritage of the Polish nation and its restless spirit is akin to that of ours and last bút nőt least their lőve of freedom, their wish fór independence and the democratic renewal of society, materialised in the great movement of Solidarnosc, which are so common with our endeavours and wishes. By this latter statement, however, we alsó point at the reason why a Hungarian-Polish Society, based on reál social initiative, is nőt dear to the hearts of the regimes in Warsaw and Budapest. We have hardly any hope of its being established in the near future. Meanwhile, however, we should make use of every opportunity (clubs, culture centres, free universities) fór the nurturing of personal links between our nations and fór the formulation of the shared ideals of a democratic renewal.- 2 -
