Krassó 22/1987 /E/ 12th March, 1987 Police preparations in Hungary in advance of Mareh the 15th On march the 15th, the anniversary of the 1848 Hungárián democratic revolution and national war of independence, the demonstrating young people have been regularly attacked during the pást 15 years by police using truncheons. This year, as early as the beginning of March, police patrols have been appearing on the streets of Budapest in even larger numbers than usual. On the llth of March police searched the homes of three members of the democratic opposition. Members of the opposition are watched and followeö.Some of them, like Gyula Bar­tók, Mikolta Bognár and József Talata, editors of the samizdat-joumal "Between Poles1', have been warned verbally to stay clear of participation in any kind of demonstrative action on March the 15th.("Between Poles" is the paper of VOX HUMANA, a circle formed by young raetnbers of the intelligentsia). In secondary schools pupils were warned that they'll be expelled, should they participate in an illegal demonstration. In offices and schools excursions have been organized on the March of 15th and a financial reward has been offered fór schools,which organize tours to the farest places. Youth remainig in Budapest are invited fór an all-day long cultural event to the Petőfi Hall - a performance hall easily controllable by the police. The Chain Bridge - the usual route fór the young marchers Crossing from Pest to Buda - has been closed down, ostensibly fór repairs. In accordance with a decree of the Budapest City Council, as many red flags must be hoisted on the walls of houses as the number of red-white- / green flags - the national colours - displayed, there. Political conflicts between the authorities and various groups of the popu- lation have sharpened in Hungary in the *recent years. The authorities fear that the traditional March the 15th demonstration might tűm intő a protest against the official party policy. q 4
