Kras $6 18/1987 /E/ lOth March, 1987 Harrassment of a Hungárián samizdat publlsher On the 26th of February, 1987, bailiffs appeared at 48 Kalászi St. Budapest III., the home of Jenő Nagy, organizer of the ABC Independent Publishing House and placed under seal his belongings worth of somé 12 000 forints (250 US dollars). The sequestration order (No. 24 6'85/Bu) regarding Jenő Nagy's all assetsand objects in his home up to the value of 182,912 forints (3,700 US dollars) was issued by the investigation department of the Budapest Police Headquarters on the 12th of February, 1987. The order was justified by alleging that Jenő Nagy had been drawing family allowance despite his nőt having a le- gally registered employment. A day earlier, on the 25th February, he was fined 10,000 forints by the police fór "breaking press regulations". There have been various other methods employed fór harrassing Jenő Nagy; nőt long ago, e.g. a policeman knocked at his door at 4am demanding the retum of Nagy's pássport expired several years earlier. Jenő Nagy is unemployed with two children, In 1985 and 1986 the police >- searched his home time and again and he was heavily fined several times. The last time the police confiscated samizdat publications, copying devices, paintings and personal notes in his home, was the house-searching on the 18th of December, 1986, which served as the basis fór the decision imposing the latest fine of 10,000 forints on him. The reason fór the stepping-up of the persecution, aimed at the totál bankruptey of Jenő' Nagy and his family, is that Jenő Nagy organized weekly meetings called the "Democrats1 Club" in his home (last time young people gathered there, had a talk with Gyula Obersovszky, the editor of the "Igazság" ("Truth"), a daily of the revolution, who was sentenced to death in 1957), then he published the 1987 No.2 issue of the samizdat Journal "Demokrata" entitled "The message of fiarch" containing a radical political programme and recalling the democratic demands of the 1848 revolution, furthermore a meeting to commemo- rate the 30th anniversary of the 1956 revolution was alsó held in his fiat on the 23th o'f October, 1986. Earlier the police threatened Jenő Nagy with serious consequences were they to nőid the commemoration in his piacé. Judging by signs it is expected in the party-centre that a few months after the anniversary nobody in the West pays attention to the retaliatory measures, which are applied.
