Krussó 30/1987/S/ 25th March, 1987 Debates and police actions in Hungary On the 24-th of March the police imposed a fine of 6,000 Forints on the 30 years old József Talata, living in Budapest, fór violating press regulations. On the 4th of February the political police searched the premises of József Talata and Zsolt Keszthelyi - editors of the unauthorized monthly "Égtájak között" - confiscating a number of independent publications and copying devices. Zsolt Keszthelyi was alsó summoned to a trial at the police-court a few days ago,but he could nőt appear, fór he had already been arrested, awaiting his trial in the detention of the investigation department of the Fo Street Sup- reme Military Oourt. Members of the independent artist group INCONNU - the graphic artists Tamás Molnár, Peter Bokros and Róbert Pálinkás - together with Tibor Philipp jr. were summoned to the Gouncil of District XIII to face a trial on the lst of April fór "unauthorized raising of money". Members of the group INCONNU wanted to arrange their international graphic árts exhibition call'ed "The Fighting City" in the fiat of Tibor Philipp jr., bút the police confiscated the art- works on the 18th of January, the day the exhibition was to be opened.In fact, no money raising took piacé there. The group INCONNU otherwise has published a catalogue with photographs of the pictures of the exhibition confiscated. In the evening of the 24th March a public debate was held at the Young Artists' Club on the situation of the poor in Hungary, the causes of poverty and the opportunities of relieving it. Somé two years ago a public debate on a similar subject was to be arranged in the same institution, bút at that time the meeting was banned at the last moment. At the debate on the 24th March somé representatives of the democratic opposition, like Ottilia Solt, János Kis and Ferenc KÓszeg made their contributions as well. In Budapest a 220 page analysis of 35 economists on the economic situation of Hungary and the unsatisfactory state of the reforms hitherto instituted is circulated in manuscript. The authors prepared this study on behalf of the "Pat- riotic People’s Front", bút the party leadership has forbidden to make it public. Leading party cadres are ever more sharply criticizing the policy of the sup- reme party leadership.' On the 15th March - commemorating day of the 1848 revolu- tion - Imre Pozsgay, generál secretary of the "Patriótic ihople’s Front" made a commemorating speech,thereby demanding reforms and political renewal. The party daily failed to publish the prevalent part of his speech. On the 18th March ex- minister Rezső Nyers - member of the party Central Commiteee - on answering the questions of a British correspondent spoke in favour of political pluralism, freedom of opposition activity and abolishment of the party's leading political role. Party ideologist János Berecz, questioned by the same correspondent 3 days later, acknowledged the need fór greater autonomy of the various interest groups and stated fór the first time that a "tolerated opposition" already existed in Hungary even today, bút at the same time emphasized that the party will uphold its hegemony and won't allow any other power centres to be established. _______
