5. Hungarians should avoid revenge, hatred, mockery, and the feelings of "Hungárián supi*emacy." The se have always been harmful. Instead, |they should lncrease the production of works of reconciliation and lmprove mutual understanding by means of the press. . 6. We ask both Romanians and Hungarians abroad to see a Vision of a democratic future fór Románia, and peaceful coexistence in Transylvania. 7. The thoughts and practice of Jesus, and of Tolstoy, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King should be translated intő the Tran- sylvanian context. Let us together demonstrate small bút symbolic acts of brotherhood. 8, Whenever possible we should form communities of Reconciliation as a spontaneous expression of the people. These may be In the world forums of Christianity, or only two or three individuals huddling together behind closed doors-or among the communities of people responsible fór a humán world. Let us hope that the majority of ordinary people will be inspired more by the ideas of fairness, justice and lőve than by the hatred that only yields pain. We alsó depend on the understanding of our Románián brothers because they have compatriots in other countries whose rights are alsó our concern. A REQUEST FÓR HELP Hungarians and Romanians are in need of help fór our Program of Reconciliation. We request the help of the head of the Román Catholic Church, as well as the help of the great cominunity of the Orthodox and Protestants, the World Council of Churches. Neither of these can continue in silent indifference. We alsó turn with confidence to the people of the USA, who have been so sensitive to humán rights. Their common action could be a good example of how to work towards peace in the whole world. Finally, we ask Europe, which has been dreaming about unity fór so long, to follow its best humanitarian traditions and neither tolerate nor encourage the rebirth of the démon of nationalism that is now destroying its eastern frontler. To resist évii is a duty we have by virtue of being humán. It remains a duty even in the face of brutality which continúally tests our hope. We request that all who hear or read this ap- peal, which has been born under such tragic circumstances, to support this Program of Reconciliation between Romanians and Hungarians.
