Péter Bán Three Tithe-Instructions From the Sixteenth Century The author presents the practice of the registration and collection of the tithe in the period when the Bishop of Eger gave his fortress to the king because of the Ottoman expansion, and his income was alsó collected by the Hungárián Royal Chamber, mainly for the benefit of the fortress. - The publication consists of two units because he makes a comparative analysis of two resource groups, but only County Heves is analysed in detail. The first part is a study; he analyses the content of the instruction-examples made for the „decimatores" in such a way that he controls their effective realization with the help of a source publication of the author, which contains two previous registers of the tithe [conscriptio]. The comparison covers mainly the cereals-, wine- and lamb-tithes in detail but it gives a chance for drawing conclusions in the fields of economic history and the history of the Church. (e.g. decrease of the importance of the chapter, the acknowledgement of protestant preachers). The study solves somé disputed questions, liké the relation of collecting the tithe by the Church and the ninth by the landowner, the way of getting tax on progeny and the controlling systems of accurate collection of the tithe. - The second part publishes the texts of three instruction-formulas, which were made for people who registered and collected the cereals-, wine- and lamb-tithes in the fortress of Eger. On the basis of their content, these instructions were valid for the thirteen North-Eastern Hungárián counties that belonged to the bishopric of Eger. The resource-publication kept the Hungárián orthography of the age, which can be useful alsó for the historians of script and language. 74
