Tanulmányok - Varga Gábor: A debreceni református kollégium szikszói szőlőbirtokának története (1776-1842)

Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Levéltár Évkönyve XXX. 127 Tlie history of the Debrecen Presbyterian College’s vineyard estate at Szikszó (1776-1842) Gábor Varga The documents of the Debrecen Presbyterian college’s estate at Szikszó allowed a glance into the one-time famous - but still unknown in the technical literature - south-abaúj grape growing. We discovered what kind of vineyard work and to what schedule was carried out at the end of the XVIII century and the beginning of the XIX century. Thanks to the good vintages it was worthwhile for the Debrecen Presbyterian college to cultivate the grapes even from such a great distance. The good connection between the college and the small town was characteristic right to the end. Administration of the grape harvest, taking on the workers and settling up with them was always carried out by some academic student. From the vineyard and other donations by Halász Takách Sámuel, during seventy years the college was able to assist in the tuition of 200 needy students. Thus the vineyard at Szikszó indirectly contributed greatly to the training of „civilized people”.
