In 1693, Debrecen received the rank of royal free borough for its unswerving loyalty. With this act, Debrecen became the property estate of the monarch. The city was henceforth regarded as noble; however, the income provided by the status of royal free borough was not able to compensate for the negative effects of the devastations of war and tributes collected. The consolidation of the Hapsburg monarchy meant the closing of the frontiers and the loss of the old commercial relationships. The leading role and wealth of Debrecen, therefore, disappeared by the end of the century.
