279 A Kerekestelepi Olvasókör 1944. július 1-ig a Leiningen u. 17. sz. alatt működött. A július másodikai bombatámadás után helyiségüket átengedték a bombakárosultaknak lakás céljára. 1945 október 1-től március 15-ig orosz katonák tartózkodtak a kör helyiségében, majd 1945 júliusától az MDP Kerekestelepi szervezetének kezelésébe került. 1948 januárjában az Olvasókör és az MKP között megegyezés jött létre: az egyesület ismét használhatja korábbi helyiségét, az MKP viszont sem teremhasználati díjat, sem villanyhasználati díjat nem követel a körtől. Ezt követően az olvasókör rövid ideig - feloszlatásáig - ismét működött.84 Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Levéltár Évkönyve XXIX Suburban Reading Circles in Debrecen in the First Half of the 20th Century Ilona Kovács In the early 20th century, only two reading circles existed in the city of Debrecen, with the majority of such associations forming in the period between the world wars, in the 1920s and 1930s. A total number of 13 reading circles worked in the city, which performed their activities in the suburbs of Debrecen. In their bylaws, the reading circles identified the cultivation of social life, the dissemination of culture, and self-education as their chief objectives. They aimed to achieve these objectives by way of discussions, reading books and newspapers, holding lectures and readings, and organizing singing groups and libraries^ The associations, in proportion with their financial capabilities, also aided the poor, and placed great emphasis on the representation of their members’ religious, patriotic and economic interests as well. The membership of reading circles consisted mainly of people from various layers of the lower middle-classes, such as artisans, tradesmen, non-commissioned officers, but a significant number of white collar workers (teachers, pastors, lawyers, clerks) were also among their ranks. In addition to providing reading and cultural opportunities, the reading circles also offered entertainment possibilities to suburban citizens by organizing tea and dinner parties or dance evenings with cabaret or some other form of entertainment. «4 HBML X. 58.
