Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Levéltár Évkönyve XXVIII. 247 THE LIST OF RESIDENTS OF HAJDÚ TOWNS WHO TOOK AN OATH ON THE CONFEDERACY OF SZÉCSÉNY, 1705 Imre Bánkúti One of the most significant national assemblies of the Rákóczi War of Independence was held in Szécsény (12 September to 7 October 1705). Here the nobility revolting against the absolutism of Vienna created its own feudal alliance (confederacy). They elected Ferenc Rákóczi II, prince of Transylvania (princeps Transsylvaniae) as their ruling prince {dux), and ordered that all noblemen, as well as the residents of the royal and other privileged towns must take an oath on the confederacy. The envoys of the seven Hajdú tows (Szoboszló, Polgár, Dorog, Vámospércs, Hadház, Böszörmény és Nánás) were not present at the national assembly of Szécsény, since these towns regarded themselves as belonging to Transylvania, and therefore, they only welcomed the assembly and the prince in letter. However, still in 1705 they submitted to the prince the list of 609 persons, which proved that these people had taken the oath. The publication of this document will provide help in the statistical examination of the Hajdú towns and for genealogical research.
