The idea of the so-called “free peasant society” had probably been one of his concerns for some time before. In order to illustrate this, I will refer to one of the charters issued by Transylvanian voivod Kristóf Báthory in 1559 in which the latter ordered the villeins of nine villages of the young István Bocskay exempt írom services to be rendered to landowners.
