238 Gazdag István: A Debreceni Egyesített Fiú Gimnázium The Debrecen Unified High School for Boys /1944-1946/ István Gazdag On October 19, 1944, the war ended in Debrecen, and reconstruction work was started almost immediately. A fundamental place for starting life anew was the schools. The former school-buildings that were returned by the Soviet troops had been partly destroyed, with the majority of their furniture and equipment gone. The libraries and school collections of physical and chemical apparatus were all but empty, and the students could be received only after the most essential renovation efforts had been made. Starting school in all five of the former high schools in Debrecen at the same time was impossible, so preparations for establishment of Debreceni Egyesített Fiú Gimnázium (Debrecen Unified High School for Boys) were duly made. The academic year commenced late, only in December 1944, in the building of the Protestant College. As the situation improved, by March 1945, the religious high schools separated and the Jewish High School was closed down. The high school used by the university for teaching practice was separated from Mihály Fazekas High School in 1946, and moved to a new location. As far as teaching was concerned, the different political forces had their different ideas. The left-wing parties, headed by the communists, wanted a “new kind of school” with a revised curriculum and a screened and selected teaching staff. The unified high school had a very important role in the restarting of the teaching and in the operation of the teaching staff. An analysis of the academic work done in the school is still to be conducted.
