Tóth Béla: Könyves Tóth Mihály... Confiscation of Mihály Könyves Tóth’s possessions in 1949 Béla D. Tóth Mihály Könvyves Tóth, Calvinist minister, the ardent orator was captured by the Austrians on 7lh August, when the Hungarian War of Independence had not yet been defeated. He was first condemned to death by the military court, then the sentence was changed to life imprisonment by an act of clemency. In the Hungarian National Archives a file of documents was found, which contains the document on the confiscation of the property of the imprisoned clergyman. Könyves Tóth, who had been educating his children and step-daughter as a widower, must have lived under very modest conditions. His imprisonment and the confiscation of his possessions meant that his children, too, became homeless and destitute. The appointed guardian turned to the authorities with the request of returning to the afflicted, innocent children at least the most important pieces of furniture, bedclothes. The source edition by Béla D. Tóth contains the minutes taken at the act of confiscation and the correspondence carried out for the sake of the children.
