Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Levéltár Évkönyve XXV 115 The Political career of Ödön Beöthy 1830-1848 Erzsébet Orvos, Mrs Szendi The study summarizes the life and political career of Bihar County’s Nartional Assembly representative and Sub-Prefect from 1830 until the outbreak of the 1848 Revolution. His activities during the War of Independence are only cursorily mentioned. The first part of the study is a brief summary of the economic, social and political life of Bihar County and the whole of Hungary. In doing so the author endeavours to show the antecedents of the National Reform Assembly and the attitude of the noblemen, among them of Ödön Beöthy towards the reforms. The political career of Beöthy can be dated as beginning in 1830, this was the year when he was first elected National Assembly representative (he was elected four times consecutively). In a short time he became the spokesman of the reform-party opposition not only at the Bihar-County Conventions but also in the National Assembly. In 1841 he was elected Sub-Prefect, in 1848 Lord Lieutenant. In 1848-48, although he had been given several tasks, he rather withdrew from active participation since he did not agree with the radical changes.
