Hajdú-Bihar Megyei Levéltár Évkönyve XXIV 173 for the delivery of several tens of thousands of flagstones. The result: in 1870 the town had a length of about 5 km paved roads. In the middle of the 19lh century there was a regular service of horse-drawn omnibuses. In 1876 the regulation of the main street, Piac Street was begun. As early as that time the question of the necessity of building a municipal horse-drawn railway was raised. In the last years of the century asphalt appeared in the city's road construction practice, first as the cover of walkways. Then, after two decades of debates and delay, in 1884 a steam-operated municipal railway line was opened with horse-drawn branch lines. In the last years of the 19th century the most important roads of the city were covered with flagstone pavement. In the side streets the cheaper cyclopic stone pavement was applied. In the streets of the rapidly populating suburbs mostly macadam roads were built. In the end, asphalt became more common in the construction of the city's roads.
