CHARTERS TO THE RELATION OF THE TOWN OF DEBRECEN AND THE NOBLEMEN / 1587-1601/ István Balogh The discordance lasted sinced 1561 between the town of Debrecen and the noblemen living there ended with absolute victory of the magistracy of the market-town in those years. The discordance started with the act that the noblemen moved into the market-town refused to acknowledge the jurisdiction of the court of judges and jurymen living in the market-town who were not ranged amongst noblemen under public law. Moreover the licence of the owners of nobleman's estate for retailing of wine reduced the income coming from similar source of the town. The effors of magistracy were two-directional: 1/ with the help of Transylvanian princes wielded power over the market-town they endeavoured to have the jurisdiction of the court over the noblemen acknowledged and to get the two nobleman's estate and the smaller royal fruitions regarding the estates (first of the right for retailing of wine). On the strength of the evidence of charters one of the estates was bought by purchase with every single privilege of the town from the last two living descendants of the grantor family for 3800 Fts after long-lasting litigation (documents 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13). The other nobleman's estate was the property of different landlords of the market-town since the 13 th century On that estate was standing their castles that was not rebuild after its burning down in 1561.
