Contributions to the history of the journal "Okiratok és Levelek Tára" (The Archive of Old Documents and Letters) István Gazdag In the cultural life of Debrecen there was a period of prosperity in the last third of the 19th century. Dr. Samu Kardos a juridest, founded his monthly “The Archive of Old Documents and Letters” in 1905. Encouraged by the success of his work about “The Life and Works of the Baron Miklós Wesselényi (1796-1850)”, written in two volumes, Samu Kardos, who also dealt with historical investigations, chose to become editor. His monthly was also sponsored by the Town Council of Debrecen. The journal published primarily certificates, letters and other historical documents preserved by Kardos. The editor gathered a comprehensive staff of edditors and authors. Financing the journal was, however, beyond the possibilities of Samu Kardos, and since the Town Council gave no more financial support after the first number was issued, “The Archive of Old Documents and Letters” existed for only a short period of two years. Historiographers objected to the editorial work and structure from a professional point of view. The journal is held to be not only a product of the mentality of Debrecen in that era, but also a characteristic piece of the cultural-scientific life of the so-called provinces, the area out of the capital. We are also provided with the opportunity to inspect the mental capacity of our town and to find out about the strategy of town administration. Дополнения к истории журнала «Старинные документы и Архив» Иштван Газдаг В последней трети XIX века в жизни города Дебрецена наблюдается развитие культурной жизни. Доктор Шаму Кардош, по профессии юрист, в 1905 году создал ежемесячный журнал «Старинные документы и Архив». Занимающийся также и историческими исследованиями Шаму Кардош, окрыленный успехами от издания двухтомника «Жизнь и работа барона Мик- лоша Вешшеленьи (1796—1850)», вступил на путь издателя. Этот журнал получил поддержку и со стороны Дебреценского Городского Совета. В первую очередь этот журнал опубликовывал находящиеся у Кардоша документы, письма и другие исторические материалы. Издатель создал широкую сеть журналистов и публицистов. Однако издание журнала превосходило возможности Шаму Кардоша, а поддержка Городского Совета была прекращена после издания первого номера, то этот журнал просуществовал всего два года. Историки с точки зрения профессионализма критиковали организацию и структуру журнала. Журнал «Старинные документы и Архив» считается не только одним из продуктов духовной жизни Дебрецена того времени, но и дает характерное представление о культурной и научной жизни не столицы, а провинции. Кроме того в нем открывается возможность познакомиться с готовностью города воспринимать духовные ценности, и ознакомления со стратегией городских властей. 149
