Documents of the Office of Civil Engineering of Debrecen in the Archives of Hajdu-Bihar county Zoltán Ujlaky Regional offices of civil engineering were organized on the basis of the regulation no. 1885: 23 in order to govern waterworks operations; since 1879 civil engineering had already existed within the frames of the Ministry of Agriculture. The organization and authority of the offices for civil engineering were regulated by several regulations, but the offices were not real authorities, they were experts of general waterworks authorities. The documentary materials of the Office of Qvil Engineering of Debrecen from 1886 to 1948 can be found in the Archives, making up 12,24 running meters. The original competency of the office extended to the counties of Hajdú, Szabolcs and Szatmár and to the towns of Debrecen and Szatmárnémeti. Bihar county belonged to the official district between 1919-1940 and 1944-1948. From the counties mentioned the irrigational, inland water draining, riverbed-regulational and meliorstional affairs, furthermore the documents connected to the discovery of thermal waters, the desiccation of supplied building plots, the watering of pastures and construction of fishponds are included in the original materials. 130
