The paper gives a general survey of the development ot libraries in Hungary and Hajdu- Bihar county between the two world wars; concentrating on both the public libraries and the reading circles. It deals in detail with the story of the Fazekas Gábor Craftmen’s Reading Circle in Hajdúböszörmény between 1935 and 1945, with their rules, structure, wealth and the role they played in general education.

The final conclusion of the paper is that this reading circle similarly to the others of this kind in the country lost its original role in the 40-ies, and was characterised by a rightwing ideology.
