FRAGMENTA MINERALOGICA ET PALAEONTOLOGIGA 14. BUDAPEST, 1989 P . &S-99 The Oligocène flora of Nagysáp By L. HABLY (Received November 18, 1988) Abstract: A palaeobotanical analysis of a previously unpublished macroflora in northwestern Hungary is presented. The conclusions of this analysis substantiate previous findings, that lauren-leaved subtropical forests composed the zonal vegetation in the Late Oligocène. INTRODUCTION The plant remains from the locality were collected by I. PÁLFALVY in 1965. The following may be read on labels of specimens housed in the collection of the Hungarian Geological Institute: southwest of the village, in excavations along power-line. When I first visited the area about 20 years later, there were no signs of any excavations at the site. Upper Oligocène layers broke the vegetation cover at some distance from the site but these yielded only a few plant fragments in a poor state of conservation. PÁLFALVY' s original locality may only be found again by labourious excavations, which will be possible in the future as hoped for. However, the excellent and fairly numerous remains in the collection substantiate our present knowledge regarding the Egerian flora of Transdanubia. The locality has not been described elsewhere. I wish to express my gratitude to the Hungarian Geological Institute and to its Museum for providing access to the collection. SYSTEMATIC DESCRIPTIONS PINACEAE Pinus L. Pinus sp. (Pi. 1:1; Material: MÁFI: BK - 1170 with counterproof. The bunch has three needles. Their full length is not known, width about 1 mm. The vein running along the middle of the pine-needle can be identified well. As no more of such remains were found here, we can give no closer taxonomic determination.
