1. according to him among the molars in the MNM, inv. Nr. A. 54- (lost) and A. 55 (M" 1 dext. med. fr.; now in TTMO. under the new inv. Nr. V.82.6.) (Fig. 1 and Pl. I, Fig. 1) show archaic features; 2. at the same time the M 3 in the H.R. Geol. Inst, is a typical meridionalis tooth (M 3 sin., now in M AFI: old inv. Nr. 0-223, new inv. Nr. Ob-5147); 3. finally the molar in the MNM. with "xl4x" Lamelle - inv. Nr. A. 50. (lost) shows the evolved form of the E. meridionalis evolutionary trend. His observations have been corroborated by later investigations. G. SCHLESINGER gives the stratigraphical columns of four excavations from Aszód - unfortunately none of them is the one in the railway station which yielded the Proboscidea remains - and claims that E. meridionalis never occurs in the lower sand and clay layer (FUCHS' s "blue marl") while M. arvernensis frequently does. Furthermore, M, arvernensis never occurs in the sand with gravel while E. meridionalis frequently does. The gravel has several layers and horizons and it is of Upper Pliocene age; M . arvernensis is of Levantinian age, belonging to the Middle Pliocene (loc. cit. pp. 204-206). F. SZENTES, in his summary written on the geological conditions of Aszód and its vicinity, wrote that "the Lower Levantinian formations discordantly follow the Pannonian"; the Lower Levantinian coarse sand yielded M. arvernensis molars from 1858 ( ? ) (SZENTES 1943). He announced a new arvernensis remain: north of Aszód, at the northern end of the Ohegy, beside the road in the Nagyvölgy a shaft was dug in 1936 (shaft Nr. V.) which yielded the fragments a M. arvernensis molar. This is a M 1 sin. deposited in M AFI, inv. Nr. Ob-5689 (1936). Length of the crown 94, its breadth 56.5 (3 rc * jugal) mm. Other M 1 dimensions: n-4 length of crown: 98-116 mm, breadth of crown: 60-72 mm (SCHLESINGER 1922). Upper Levantinian terrestrial gravel containing E. meridionalis is known from the railway station in Aszód and from several other localities. Fig. 2 3 Arch, gromovi M sin. aboral fr. (V. 59.1120.2.)
