(16. kép) STEEL HELMETS FROM WORLD WAR I IN THE LOCAL HISTORY COLLECTION OF HNM BALASSA BÁLINT MUSEUM Summary At the beginning of World War I, most of the soldiers wore traditional headgears, but as it turned out soon, that these headgears no longer met the requirements of modem warfare. The increased number of head injuries required the introduction of a new type of headgear, which could provide sufficient protection, but wasn't too heavy and didn't restrict the wearer in his movement. However, the new headgear also had to be suitable for mass production. This study outlines the types and extent of war injuries, detailing the head injuries. Then the different types of steel helmets developed and used by the different belligerents are reviewed. Within this, the study provides a detailed overview about steel helmets used by the Austro-Hungarian Army. The second half of the study presents the eight World War I helmets of the historical collection of the Balassa Bálint Musem affiliated to the Hungarian National Museum. We can divide these steel helmets into two major groups: helmets used by the Austro-Hungarian Army, and helmets from the Entente, especially worn by the Italian Army. This collection also contains a unique steel helmet worn by a solder of the 39lh regiment of the Czechoslovak Legion, which unit was equipped by Italy during World War I. 27 A 39. ezred III. zászlóaljának 2. százada ekkor Párkányban volt állásban.
