Eszter Gát-Péter Király Italian-Hungarian Musical Connections from the Age of Monteverdi (1567-1643) On Italian musicians active in Hungary facts have remained since the second half of the 15th century. Concerning the Royal Court the sources of the age of King Matthias Corvinus (1467-1490) and his wife Beatrix, who war of Neapolitan origin, and those of King John I (1526-1540) give us information on court musicians coming from Italy. After the fall of Buda in 1541 the court of Transylvania became an artistic centre under Italian influences continuing earlier traditions of the Hungarian Royal Court. At the court of János Zsigmond (1559-1571) and István Báthory (1571-1576) some Italian musician are documented.. The court ensemble of Zsigmond Báthory had a great numsrof Italian members, many of them known today by their names. The ensemble was lead first by Franciscus of Ancona, then probably from around 1590 by Giovanbattista Mosto of Udine. Mosto died in Gyulafehérvár in 1596. A XVII th century descripton of his tombstone exists. Cardinal András Báthory - for a short period of time Prince of Transylvania - had as "maestro di capella" Gioseffo Biffi da Casena around 1596. In the court of Gábor Bethlen (1613-1629) Italian musicians had been staying from 1622 on, most of them are not known by name tuday. Documents also report about the contract with a violinist from Venice in 1622 and musical instruments were also bought in Venice. The majority of Italian musicians in Hungary came from Northern-Italy. They came mainly from Venice and Padova, and musical instruments were also bought in these cities. István Thököly had bought for himself a Venetian harpsichord around 1600 during his studies in Padova. Only few musical data are known from the territory of the so called Royal Hungary belonging to the Habsburg Empire. At the same time it is known that court musiciam of the Habsburg Emperor, anong them Italians, had visited Hungary. In 1572 - together with other Italians - Annibale Padovano was present at the coronation of Rudolf II. In 1619 there were several Italians escorting the Emperor in the Diet of Pressburg. On the occasion of the campaign against the Ottomans in 1595 Claudio Monteverdi had visited Hungary in the retinne of Vincenzo Gonzaga, Duke of Mantova. Compositions by several Italian musicians were mentioned in Hungarian collections. The works of Monteverdi occur, however, only once in the inventory of the Lutheran-church of Pressburg in 1651. Although works of Monteverdi appeared in other sources as well but either without name or attributed to other authors. 62
