O. Merkl szerk.: Folia Entomologica Hungarica 69. (Budapest, 2008)
(1969) estimated some 800 species in the Hungarian fauna. In the last four decades several papers have been published on aphid species of cultivated plants and natural flora (SZELEGIEWICZ 1966^, b, c, 1967, 1968^, 1969, 1977, 1978^, 1981, 1982, SZÁLA Y-MARZSÓ 1969, 1989, SZELEGIEWICZ & SZALAY-MARZSÓ 2000, PINTERA & SZALAY-MARZSÓ 1962, ANDRÄSFALVY 1966,1968,1969,1971,1978, H ALMÁGYI1969,1974, BASKY 1993, KUROLI 1999,2000, RIPKA 2001,2004^, RIPKA et al 1993^, 1998). The Aphidoidea and Phylloxeroidea of Hungary are virtually uncatalogued. Recently, the number of known species has increased and it has become necessary to compile a checklist. While preparing this paper, the author has made an effort to list all the relevant publications until mid-2007. MATERIALS AND METHODS For the family Aphididae, names of family, subfamilies, genera, subgenera, species and subspecies used in the Catalogue of the world's Aphididae are adopted in this paper (REMAUDIÈRE & REMAUDIÈRE 1997). Classification of drepanosiphine aphids published by QUEDNAU (1999, 2003) was partly used. For the families Adelgidae and Phylloxetidae, the nomenclature of BLACKMAN & EASTOP (1994) and the Fauna Europaea: Taxon Details are adopted in this paper (NiETO NAFRÍA et al. 2004). The standard work of BÖRNER (1952) was also effectively applied for checking the synonym taxa. Only the taxa identified to species level in the references are included in Appendix 1. The list comprises species which were reported from present-day Hungary. Therefore, some species reported from the territory of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in the papers of HORVÁTH (1886&, 1897) are not listed, because they were found beyond the borders of present-day Hungary. Unfortunately, locality and date were not always mentioned in the papers. In Appendix 1 the genera and the species are listed in alphabetical order. The subgeneric names are indicated between parentheses. To facilitate the use of this checklist, particularly to aid in cross referencing, serial numbers are used. In the list the scientific or vernacular name of the host plant are mentioned in the form as cited in the original report. After the reference cited, the synonymous or invalid scientific name of the aphid is given in parentheses. Notes: a question mark before the aphid's scientific name = uncertain, doubtful tecord (taxonomic position). A question mark before the generic or specific name of host plant = doubtful record, a possible error is suspected. A [sicl] behind the scientific name = incorrect authority or misspelling of the scientific name of the aphid or of the host plant. It has to be noted that some aphid species, mentioned in the cecidological works, were 'identified' after the visible symptoms on the host plant caused by the insect only, not using the morphological characters of the aphid species.
