Material examined - Mayr's collection in NHMW, Vienna: 1 female labelled "Breite Föhre, col. Mayr", "Cynips tinctoria det G. Mayr"; 1 female "col. Mayr", "Cynips tinctoria det G. Mayr", "15.07.1870"; 1 female "col. Mayr", "C. tinctoria var nostras det. G. Mayr"; 1 female "col. Mayr", "var nostras det. G. Mayr". Two asexual females from the BMNH, London, both labelled as "Removed from galls imported from Turkey vii.1961". In the collection of the HNHM, Budapest, from Gy. Méhes collections there are 433 specimens (checked by G.Melika), collected from different localities in Hungary, from different oak species and earlier identified as "Andricus gallaetinctoriae"; 5 asexual females "Hungary, Pest Co., Zugliget, 13.10.1994. Papp J."; in the collection of SPL, Kőszeg: 12 females "Ukraine, Transcarpathia, Dubki, Q. robur. 05.10.1991. leg. G. Melika"; 56 asexual females and about two hundred galls, collected by G. Melika, Gy. Csóka, R. Bailey from different parts of Hungary, from Quercus petreae, Q. pubescens and Q. robur. Redescription - 4-6 mm. Head and mesosoma amber to brown, with darker stripes prolong parapsidal lines and two parallel dark stripes between notauli, scutellar foveae, axillula dark brown to black, propodeum and metanotum black, legs amber to brown, veins dark brown; metasoma reddish-brown with dark brown to black spot dorsally on tergite 2. Head coriaceous, with sparse white pubescence, more dense on lower face and clypeus; 2.7-3.0 times as broad as long from above, 1.5 times as broad as high in front view. Gena uniformly and densely micropunctate, strongly broadened behind eye, 2.1 times as broad as cross diameter of eye; malar space 0.5 times as long as height of eye. POL 1.7-2.0 times as long as OOL; OOL 2.5-2.8 times as long as diameter of lateral ocellus; LOL slightly longer than diameter of ocellus. Transfacial line 1.5-1.6 times as long as height of eye; diameter of torulus slightly shorter than distance between torulus and inner margin of eye, and slightly larger than distance between toruli; lower face with weak and short irradiating striae. Clypeus rectangular inconspicuous, epistomal sulcus distinct, well-marked, clypeo-pleurostomal line indistinct, anterior tintorial pit distinct (Figs 16, 51).
