FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LXI 2000 pp. 61-63 An Afrotropical species, Asemonea Stella (Araneae: Salticidae), found in Australia T. Szűts An Afrotropical species, Asemonea Stella (Araneae: Salticidae), found in Australia — The Afrotropical jumping spider, Asemonea Stella Wanless, 1980 is recorded from Australia for the first time. The female of the species is redescribed and figured. Key words: Araneae, Salticidae, Asemonea Stella. INTRODUCTION The genus Asemonea was described from the Afrotropical region by O. R Cambridge in 1869. Few species had been added to it, before Wanless (1980) revised the genus. In his revision, he redefined the genus (he transferred three species to the newly erected genus Goleba), and redescribed the existing species, proposing few synonyms and describing 8 species new to science. He established the general evolutionary relationships and gave a distribution map of the lyssomanid genera. The genus Asemonea is widely distributed; species were recorded from West and Central Africa, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, India, Burma and Thailand (Wanless 1980, Fig. 1). Asemonea Stella Wanless, 1980 was described from Kenya and was recorded so far only from Tanzania (Wesolowska & Russell-Smith 2000), so the occurrence of this species in Australia - by two females - in the face of the wide distribution of the genus, more than bizarre. MATERIALS AND METHODS The animals were studied with traditional methods, set in Wanless 1978. The drawings were made with camera lucida, all the measurements are given in millimeter. The specimens are deposited in the Arachnoidea collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest.
