Toxoneura quinquemaculata Macquart) and Toxoneura ephippium Zetterstedt (as Pallopteraperiod, so that their status remains uncertain. It was only some 20 years ago, when Soós (1980), in his key to the fauna of the Carpathian Basin, mentioned two species new for Hungary: Palloptera marginata Meigen and Toxoneura basimaculata (Czerny) (as Palloptera). He excluded the abovementioned doubtful records of "P. arcuata" and "P. ephippium" . Unfortunately, Morge (1984) was not aware of the latter paper, so that he still maintained these two species. Further, he added Temnosira saltuum (Linnaeus) (as Palloptera) to the list, but without giving an indication of the origin of this source. These information were uncritically adopted by Merz (1997) in his review of the fauna of various European countries. The collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum was entirely revised by Morge during his stay at the museum in September 1973 (Morge 1974). My re-examination of that part of the collection yielded a full agreement with the identifications of Morge. However, some 120 additional specimens were collected in Hungary in the past 25 years, which had not yet been identified to species. RESULTS The classification and nomenclature of the following list is the same as in McAlpine (1987) and Merz (1998). The species are arranged in alphabetical order. Localities are given as cited on the labels. Only specimens from Hungary are listed here. All specimens are deposited in the collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest. The following abbreviations are used for some localities: ANP = Aggtelek National Park, BNP = Bükk National Park, KNP = Kiskunság National Park. Palloptera flava Oldenberg, 1910 —- Material examined: ANP, Perkupa: Telekesvölgy, erdőszél, 14.VIII.1990, 1 male, leg. L. Papp. Comment: New for Hungary. This is a small, yellow species with unpatterned wings which resembles more a small Lauxaniidae or large Chyromyidae than a Pallopteridae. Therefore, it may be easily overlooked or misplaced when sorting unidentified material. It is also occurs in Poland, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Germany, Switzerland. Palloptera formosa Frey, 1930 — Material examined: ANP, Aggtelek: Lófej-forrás, 450 m, 15.IX.1987, 1 male, leg. L. Papp. Comment: New for Hungary. The finding of this species is a real surprise. So far, it has only been recorded from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Northern Russia. The present record is the first outside the boreal belt. The identity of the Hungarian specimen was confirmed with the comparison of the single known Norwegian specimen. The specimen was collected rather late in the year, which may be one reason that it has not yet been found in Central Europe. Palloptera marginata (Meigen, 1826) — Literature: Soós 1980: 52. - Material examined: Kőszeg, 2.VI.1939, 2 males, leg. Visnya; Miskolc, Sebes-víz, 2I.V. 1998, 1 male, leg. L. Papp. Comment: This is a widespread, but rare species in the Western Palaearctic region. It may be found from the lowlands to almost 2000 m altitude in the alps. Martinék (1977) suggests an association of the species with Sambucus nigra, but no rearing records are known. Palloptera umbel lata rum (Fabricius, 1775) — Literature: Thalhammer 1900: 61; Soós 1980: 53. - Material examined: ANP, Aggtelek: Almás-kert, 14.VIII.1990, 1 male, leg. L. Papp; ANP, Jósvafő, 12-27.VII.1990, 1 male, 3 females, leg. L. Papp;
