association Querco-Carpinetum orientális croaticum, located in the Mediterranean part of Croatia, the air temperature was 24°C. Males of Tabanus tergestinus were collected at 13 stations in Croatia. Two of these stations were in the continental part of Croatia, while others were located in the Mediterranean part of the country. Males of Heptatoma pellucens and Haematopota italica were collected in the morning hours on several occasions during the month of August on the station in Borovik in the continental part of Croatia. All specimens of these two species were collected in the forest consisting of oaks and plain hornebeams of the association Querco-Carpinetum croaticum; they were caught on the humid soil of the forest paths and the air temperature was 24°C. One male specimen of the species Haematopota subcylindrica was caught in July, in the shade of the crowns of willow trees in Donji Miholjac, on the right bank of the river Drava, the temperature was 25°C. Males of Dasyrhamphis anthracinus were collected in the month of May. Several male specimens were collected in 1995 at the station near the bank of Bacinska jezera, they were caught shortly after 8 o'clock in the morning while they were feeding on the yellow flowers of Paliurus spina christi. In 1996, four specimens of this species were caught at 6.45 a.m. while hovering 1 m above the rocks near the bank of Bacinska jezera; the air temperature was 22°C. While hovering, the males were headed in the direction from which the wind was blowing they were swiftly flying ahead and to the side and then returned to the same spot and continued hovering. One male of Dasyrhamphis ater was caught by means of a net on the bloom of the plant Paliurus spina christi at the station in Obrovac; it was in the afternoon with an air temperature of 26°C. Dasyrhamphis umbrinus was determined at 11 stations, predominantly in the months of May and June. Only one specimen of this species was collected in the morning with the air temperature of 24°C while it was feeding on the yellow blooms of Paliurus spina christi. Other specimens of this species were established by means of literature. Males of Philipomyia aprica were collected in Gorski Kotar during the month of July at 2 stations in the forest consisting of beech and fir-trees of the association Abieti-Fagetum illyricum. Eight males were collected late in the afternoon, around 7 p.m., on the forest path at the station in Sunger with an air temperature of 21°C; these males were hovering in one place at 1-1.5 m above ground. Males were observed at every 5 to 6 meters, hovering in the air, then swiftly flying ahead and to the side and then coming back to the initial position after a few seconds. Males of Philipomyia graeca were determined at 12 stations in the Mediterranean part of Croatia, in the months of May, June, July and August. One male was caught at 7.30 in the morning by means of a net while hovering at 1 m above ground on the bank of Bacinska jezera covered with Mediterranean vegetation. Two other males of the same species were collected at the same station while they were feeding on the yellow blooms of Paliurus spina christi, the air temperature was 22°C. The remaining species were determined in the fauna of Croatia through the examination of the collection J. Mikuska and by means of literature: Coe (1958, 1960), Krcmar and Leclercq (1997), Leclercq (1960, 1965, 1968, 1976), Majer(1985), Moucha (1959, 1965), Stróbl (1893, 1898, 1902), which contains no other data except for the number of collected specimens and the date when they were collected. As it is shown in Table 4, 161 male specimens of 24 species were collected in the continental part of Croatia, while 198 specimens of 23 species were collected in the Mediterranean part of Croatia. There are 17 species characteristic only for the continental region and 16 species that were found only in the Mediterranean region, species Chrysops viduatus, Atylotus loewianus, Tabanus autumnalis, Tabanus bromius, Tabanus glaucopis, Tabanus tergestinus and Philipomyia graeca were collected in both regions
