FOLIA ENTOMOLOGICA HUNGARICA ROVARTANI KÖZLEMÉNYEK LX 1999 pp. 69-82 Ptychoid oribatids from Madagascar (Acari: Oribatida) S. Mahunka Ptychoid oribatids from Madagascar (Acari: Oribatida) — Ten euphthiracaroid oribatid species are listed and discussed from Madagascar, 4 of them new to science and one of them representing a new genus: Niedbalaia gen. n. (fam. Euphthiracaridae Jacot, 1930). With 20 figures. INTRODUCTION For quite some time I have been making research into the oribatids of Madagascar (Malagasy Republic), e.g. Mahunka 1996. During his recent expedition, my friend, Prof. Dr. Tamás Pócs, collected and extracted on the spot new material to enable further study. The results of my research are published in parts. The euphthiracaroid mites of Madagascar, together with the Ethiopian Region, were revised recently by Niedbala (1998). Out of the five species recorded from Madagascar he described two as new: Ohbotritia spinosa (Mahunka, 1988), Oribotritia succinta Niedbala, 1998, Oribotritia tiwi Mahunka, 1987, Indotritia paulyi Niedbala, 1998 and Microtritia hauseri Mahunka, 1993. In this paper I list 10 species of the families Oribotritiidae Grandjean, 1954 and Euphthiracaridae Jacot, 1930. Three had already been mentioned by Niedbala, while four species are new to science and one of them represents also a new genus {Niedbalaia gen.n.) belonging to the family Euphthiracaridae Jacot, 1930. In the descriptions and the terminology I follow those of my previous papers (e.g. Mahunka 199Q). ORIBOTRITIIDAE Grandjean, 1954 Indotritia paulyi Niedbala, 1998 The species was described by Niedbala on the basis of a single specimen from Madagascar. The recently collected two specimens are identical with the original description, except that its sensillus is not wholly setiform, since it bears a fine velum on both sides. * This work was also sponsored by the Hungarian Scientific Research Fund (OTKA 16729).
